You may encounter a situation in which your remote host’s shell is configured to read startup files you do not control, and this setup does not occur when you attempt to launch a remote REPL. This may happen, e.g., in a computing cluster, where some startup files are required to correctly set up your environment (libraries, paths, and so forth) but are not being read by non-interactive non-login shells.
